by Rob Norris-Weber, pastor

Last week Sunday, as we were enjoying the Spirit Garage post worship Garage Party, I heard the news about the Orlando Pulse nightclub shooting. I was in shock. Saddened by the news. Who could do such a thing, supposedly in the name of religion? I believe too many people know their religious books just enough to be dangerous.

The religion I believe in is about respect, living out the Golden Rule, “Do to others as you would have them do to you.” This is found in almost all the major religions:

  • Confucianism: “Do not do to others what you do not want them to do to you” (Analects 15:23)
  • Hinduism: “This is the sum of duty: do not do to others what would cause pain if done to you” (Mahabharata 5:1517)
  • Buddhism: “Hurt not others in ways that you yourself would find hurtful” (Udanavarga 5:18)
  • Islam: “None of you has faith until he loves for his brother or his neighbor what he loves for himself.” (Sahih Muslim, Book 1, Number 72)

Thankfully that was the medicine I needed as Alex and Jen stepped up for Karaoke. Welcome to the gospel according the B-52’s. Wouldn’t be surprised if that song had been played more than once at the Pulse.

Love Shack

The Love Shack is a little old place where
We can get together
Love Shack baby
A Love Shack baby
Love Shack, baby Love Shack
Love Shack, baby Love Shack
Love Shack, baby Love Shack (oh baby that’s where it’s at)
Love Shack, baby Love Shack (baby that’s where it’s at)

Bang bang bang on the door baby!
Knock a little louder baby!
Bang bang bang on the door baby!
I can’t hear you
Bang bang bang on the door baby!
Knock a little louder sugar!
Bang bang bang on the door baby!
I can’t hear you

Bang bang bang on the door baby, knock a little louder
Bang bang on the door baby, bang bang!
On the door baby, bang bang!
On the door, bang bang!
On the door baby, bang bang!

“Knock, and the door will be opened for you. “ – Jesus (Mt7:7b)

At Spirit Garage all are welcome. We also believe all can be transformed to find the acceptance, forgiveness, and love of Jesus. From the mouth of a former persecutor of religious fundamentalism we hear Paul announce, “For I am convinced that…nothing in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Rm8:38-39) Furthermore “There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, {straight or gay}, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.” (Gal3:28)
