Spirit Garage’s popular holiday show back on December 10th…with a twist

Christmas #IRL

After 13 years of the big production Garage Band Christmas shows, Spirit Garage is switching things up a bit, even down to the name. Christmas #IRL (in real life, for us older folks) reflects that change. It’ll still be a song-filled and festive event no doubt. And It’ll still showcase the depth of Spirit Garage’s musical and performance talents. But here’s where it gets interesting. It’ll also give our community a chance to shine.

This year we’re opening up the stage with our first ever, holiday open mic. The format will feel even more intimate than in the past, kind of like a family holiday gathering – IF your family is the kind that likes to sing, laugh, play music, do spoken word or comedy.

The Holiday Spirit

Have you got a hankering to sing a Hank William’s style version of I’ll Have a Blue Christmas? Or are you a ringer for Beyonce singing Do You Hear What I Hear. Maybe retelling the story about your own Christmas mishaps back in 1986 involving a runaway shopping cart and a Tickle Me Elmo doll is guaranteed to slay an audience. These are just a few examples of just what could happen on the stage at Solomon’s Porch, 100 W. 46th Street, Minneapolis, the space that Spirit Garage shares with the church of the same name.

Variety is the key here and all forms of family friendly fun are welcome. Think of it as one of those old school television variety shows but in real time.

Under the Spotlight

Solomon’s Porch is the perfect place to hold such an event. The acoustics are fantastic, and all backed up by a performance grade sound system. And there’s a baby grand piano already on the stage, and even a full drum kit if you want it. (Rock on little drummer boy.) Just bring yourself or your band and gear, plug in and go.

If you’re more the I’d-rather-be-in-the-audience kind and just want to show up for the entertainment you’re in luck, the space is filled with a funky collection of comfy old couches. It really is just like being in your childhood living room. Except you probably won’t get beaned by an irresponsibly used Nerf gun from your cousin Tyler.

The Nuts and Bolts

The open mic will go from 7:30 to 9:00 p.m. CST. Because there are a limited number of performance spots, we ask that you sign up in advance if you want to take the stage. In order for the organizers to ensure a smooth-running show, you’ll need to fill out some basic info on this form about your act like:

  • Which instruments you might be using,
  • A little bit about the material (we just want to make sure there aren’t going to be three different versions of White Christmas),
  • The number of performers, and
  • Any other information needed to help set the stage.

So, please sign up early to guarantee your spot.

Make Merry

So don your Christmas sweater and round up a gaggle of friends for a night of holiday cheer. Get the band back together. Or just show up for the entertainment.

Oh, and did I mention there will be refreshments and cookies?
