June Anti-Racism Challenge @ Holly's Backyard

Join the June Anti-Racism Challenge

Each month, we explore issues around race in different ways in order to do anti-racism work, with homework during the month and a conversation over zoom. You are welcome to just do the challenge, but feel free to join the conversation.

Your Homework for the month:

Now that most people are vaccinated and the world is a little more open, it is time to explore the world outside of screens and books. Find events or spaces that may include or center people of color. Notice how your body and mind respond when you consider going. Then choose one to go to, and notice what you experience when you go.
Here are some ideas for this week:
  • Attend this Community Prayer Gathering for Justice on Thursday, June 10th from 7-7:30 PM at Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church in Apple Valley. https://www.sotv.org/community-prayer-gathering-for-justice/
  • Go get grilled cheese at All Square, which isn’t a Black business per se, but because it employs former convicts, and the criminal justice system arrests and convicts black people more often and gives longer sentences to them when convicted, the large majority of fellows at All Square are not white.
  • Find spaces that are not all white. Here are the names of three restaurants you could try: Mama Sheila’s House of Soul (this is a block and a half away from my house, so you could even go and eat there before coming over to my house. Trio (plant-based food in uptown) and Soul Bowl.
Then, notice what you feel.
Watch for events coming up around the commemoration of the Emmanuel 9 event, (June 18) the Derek Chauvin sentencing (June 25) and Juneteenth (June 19th).

Join the Conversation:

On June 16th at 7 PM we’ll gather a group of people to talk about what they have seen and heard and experienced, and how they are integrating that into their learning about race. You are encouraged to write down some notes while you watch the show or soon after so that we have things to talk about! Email  Pastor Holly, or you can email [email protected] for the address (or check your weekly email).
